In setting up a small office/home office, you’ll first want to set up your Cable/DSL modem configuration. However, the CompTIA A+ 220-1001 objective lists the access point settings first, so we’ll cover it first.
A SOHO router/switch may include a wireless access point for which you can change the settings.
Access point setting options include enabling and disabling its frequencies (either 2.4 GHz and/or 5GHz), depending on the wireless standard you opt to use.
You should also configure the security and encryption on the access point. The types of wireless security protocols are covered in the CompTIA 220-1002 objectives. But in case, it shows up in the 220-1001 CompTIA A+ exam, please be sure to review the wireless security types so that you know which option to configure in which scenario. Generally, the recommended option is to use WPA2 + AES since it is the most secure.
You can also configure the SSID for a wireless access point. You can choose the security mode (with WPA2 being the recommended setting). A SOHO router/switch with access point setting will generally also allow you to select which channel and the channel bandwidth to use.
