Smart cards can provide a method of authentication. For example, your laptop can be securely configured so that the only way you can use your laptop is by inserting your card into the smart card reader. Otherwise the laptop will remain disabled.
Smart card readers can come integrated into the laptop or you can purchase an external USB connect card reader such as the one picture above.
