In Windows, important logs are stored in:

  • Event Viewer (centralized repository for logs pertaining to applications, security, operating system, and other components)
  • Boot logs (logs created during the boot process. Boot logs are turned on inside of System Configuration. The logs are then stored at: C:\Windows\ntblog.txt

For Linux, most logs including application and operating system logs, can be found at /var/log.

For macOS X, you can find a consolidated view of logs in the Utilities folder, using the Console app.

Error Messages

The details of an error message are crucial to troubleshooting. If an error message occurs, write down everything it says or take a picture or video.

If you don’t know what the error message means, search the Internet to see if someone can provide clues.
