- A wire conductor sits in the middle. A dielectric insulator surrounds the wire conductor. Metal shielding then surrounds the dielectric insulator. Finally a plastic jacket surrounds the metal shielding.
- Primarily for modems and satellite connections
- Has core surrounded by insulation then surrounded by shield of braided cable then surrounded by protective insulating cover.
- Types: RG-6, RG-59:
- RG-6 is used in television/digital cable. It provides high speed Internet over cable.
- RG-59 is thinner and doesn’t travel as far as RG-6. RG-59 is used as patch cables and not designed for long distances.
- Speed and transmission limitations: 100 Mbps, but splitters lower signal quality and speed
- Connectors: BNC or F type (F type is common on cable modems and tvs)
