Line of Sight is a wireless internet service that can provide access over a wide geographical area. It’s called line of sight because it requires a visual path between the antennas. Individual antennas need to have direct line of sight to the central antenna. Therefore, the antennas are usually placed vey high up where there are less obstructions. Line of sight uses high frequencies.
Line of Sight services are common in metropolitan areas and can cover many home simultaneously in one geographical area.
A common type of Line of Sight service is called WiMAX networking. WiMAX stands for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access. WiMAX provides wireless high speed internet access by putting an antenna outside of your house and accesssing the WiMAX antennas in your area.
- Provides greater range than typical WI-Fi.
- Uses high powered, directional antennas and Ethernet bridge devices.
There are options for non light of sight. This provides lower speeds at lower frequencies.
