The Wide Area Network (WAN) connection and the Local Area Network (LAN) connection need IP addresses assigned to them. When you first connect your device, the WAN interface is automatically assigned an IP from your Internet Service Provider (ISP) via DHCP. Some service provides require that you implement authentication into the router’s configuration before it’s able to be used on the network.
For the internal LAN interface, the SOHO router is usually a DHCP server itself, and thus when you plug in any device into the SOHO router, the device will automatically get an internal IP address. The IP addresses that are given can be defined on the SOHO router. The Internal IP address and subnet mask of the router can be viewed in the SOHO router settings. The configuration page will also show you the DHCP address range for other devices, and the DNS server addresses.
