SMB stands for Server Message Block. SMB is also called CIFS (Common Internet File System). SMB uses TCP port 445.
Instead of using FTP to transfer files from one system to another, Microsoft Windows uses the SMB/CIFS protocol. SMB/CIFS allows for file sharing and printer sharing.
Modern Windows versions don’t need to use NetBIOS protocols, instead they can communicate directly through SMB over TCP.
