Remote Desktop Connection is used in non Home editions of Windows. Remote Desktop Connection is used when continual access to a remote system is needed. For example, a Help Desk technician in a corporate environment would need ongoing access to remote computers so that they can provide troubleshooting.
Authentication is integrated into Windows authentication. Therefore, the user remoting in via Remote Desktop Connection would just use their normal Windows credentials on your system.
You may need to configure your router or firewall to do port forwarding for Remote Desktop traffic.
