Many applications perform background processes known as services. Services don’t require user interaction, instead they just run behind the scenes. Services include things like file indexing, anti-virus, network browsing, etc.
Many services start automatically when you boot up your machine. If you have problems during the start up process, it may be related to these services.
Services can be managed through command line commands of net start or net stop. However, you also manage services through the graphical interface of the Services utility. This can be found in the Control Panel under Administrative Tools. The services utility can also be accessed by typing in the following command: services.msc
